Charles Edward Fowlie

Charles Edward Fowlie, affectionately known as Sonny and Charlie Tomatoes, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, in Glen Rock, New Jersey. Born on July 18, 1937, in Jersey City, Charles lived a life marked by dedication, service, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.

For fifty years, Charles devoted his professional life to the world of working as a Stereotypist for The New York Times and various other New York papers. Beyond the plateroom, his diverse career reflected a genuine spirit of service: from volunteering for the Palisades Park Ambulance Corp., driving an oil truck for Oil City to operating a school bus, and serving the Palisades Park Police Department as a Traffic and Parking Officer. His life was a tapestry of varied experiences, each role embraced with diligence and pride.

Charles's youthful dedication to discipline and leadership was evident early on when he participated in ROTC during high school. This foundational experience cultivated values that resonated throughout his life — integrity, responsibility, and the importance of guiding others.

Family and friends will remember Charles as a steadfast source of support, always ready to lend a helping hand. His generous spirit and love for those close to him were the cornerstones of his character. He was profoundly proud of his involvement in "The Club"-AA," a community where he shone by guiding many toward sobriety and renewed hope and all while earning his 56 year chip.

An avid motorcyclist, Charles found joy and camaraderie among The Blue Knights, attending numerous international conventions. This passion kept his adventurous spirit alive and connected him to a brotherhood that shared his love for the open road and fellowship.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Meryle (nee Tamburro), and their children: Raymond and his partner Bill Gruber; Cheryl and her husband Timothy Leahy; Daniel and his wife Denise; and Dawn Fowlie. His legacy also lives on through his cherished grandchildren — Nicole and her husband Lamont Mann, Steven Fowlie, Erin Nadolny and her wife Lindsey, Breann Fowlie, Mathew Fowlie, Julia Fowlie and her fiancé Brian Cottrell, Haley Leahy and her fiancé Honey Mautino — as well as his great-grandchildren September Mann and Keelie Mann. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he treasured deeply and considered family.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elsie (nee Talach) Fowlie, whose memories he held dear throughout his life.

A visitation in honor of Charles’s rich and full life will be held on May 23, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Frank Patti & Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home, located at 327 Main Street in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
