Athena H. Memetzis (née Couvielos), 71, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, passed away from brain cancer on July 26, 2026. She was born on July 11, 1955, in New York City and moved to Fort Lee during her high school years, the place she would call home for the rest of her life.
Anyone who knew Athena knew she was rarely still, and she carried that same spirited, adventurous energy into everything she did. She held a true love for Greece, especially the island of Kefalonia, where she could finally slow down and simply be with friends and family at her second home. You could find her sitting in the square with a Greek coffee, talking with everyone who passed by.
At the center of it all, Athena was a devoted mother who would do anything for her son, and that same fierce loyalty extended to everyone she loved. She showed up: for celebrations, for hard days, and for all the ordinary moments in between. If you needed her, she was there.
Athena is survived by her husband of 35 years, Ioannis (John) Memetzis; her son, Nondas Memetzis; her brother, Hercules Couvielos (Karen); her niece, Justine Pascali (Nick); her nephew, Jason Couvielos (Kate); and her two great-nieces, Mia and Sophia, along with many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Epaminondas and Theodora Couvielos.
Athena's devotion to family and her open door for anyone who needed her will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
